The Story Behind Rocket Ball

Rocket Ball was created in 2002 by Gopala Krishnan, inspired by his younger brother, Satheesh.

At a time when Satheesh was unable to take part in outdoor games, I wanted to find a simple way to keep him engaged, active, and connected with play.

I initially arranged a few plastic bottles and asked him to throw a ball at them. He could occasionally knock the bottles down, but they were too light and would easily topple over. I then replaced the bottles with a pole.

That simple change created something unexpected.

When the ball struck the pole, it rebounded back to the ground. From this simple interaction, the core concept of Rocket Ball was born.

In the original version of the game, the basic scoring was simple: when the ball hit the pole and then touched the ground, the thrower earned 2 points. If the fielding player successfully caught the rebound, the fielding team earned 2 points.

What began as a simple activity for one family member gradually developed into a structured sporting concept.

Over the years, the game has evolved through continuous development, experimentation, and refinement. The original idea of throwing the ball at a pole and responding to its rebound remains at the heart of the sport, while the rules, playing structure, equipment, officiating, and competition format have developed significantly.

From a simple idea in 2002 to an organised sport with an international vision, Rocket Ball continues to grow while staying connected to the simple moment from which it all began.
